July 7, 2010 - HIGH GRADE DRILLER HELPERS BLAST INTO THE WORKFORCE
Just a week after the Northern College’s Surface Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program graduation, each of the 13 graduates have been hired by drilling companies. With numerous drilling projects slated for the upcoming year, and the quality hands on experience they gained in the program, it’s not a surprise the grads are working already.
Wednesday June 30, 2010 four of the program’s graduates were hired before the end of their graduation luncheon, and reported for orientation two days later; others were hired by week’s end. Home long enough to re-pack and spend limited precious quality time with family, these freshly trained driller helpers will be working in a variety of locations as far as Baffin Island, and as nearby as the backwoods of Kirkland Lake. Boart Longyear, CABO Drilling, Levert Drilling, and Chibougamau Diamond Drilling have all taken part in the hiring process; Northern College hopes to see additional partnerships develop as a result of the program’s success.
Northern College is already preparing for the next Surface Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program, offered from October 12th to December 17th at the Kirkland Lake campus. Eager applicants for the next intake are already submitting early applications to ensure access to one of the twelve coveted spaces in the program. With an abundance of exploration projects, retiring drillers, and a gold price hovering around $1,200.00 per ounce, there may be many more positions created in the industry in the coming years.
