TIMMINS, ON: Negotiations between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) representing college faculty and the College Employer Council are ongoing. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has consented to a faculty strike vote which will be conducted on Monday, September 10, 2012.
Conducting a strike vote is normal in college faculty bargaining and does not necessarily mean there will be a strike.
Classes at Northern College will start as scheduled, on Wednesday, September 5th. Orientation for students will be held the day before and many activities have been planned for the first week of the fall semester.
“More than ever, our focus is on providing accessible learner and community success through partnerships,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “We have been preparing for the upcoming academic year and eagerly await the start of classes. Northern College is hopeful that a resolution to faculty bargaining will be reached.”
OPSEU is the largest provincial public sector union within Canada, representing more than 10,000 faculty members at colleges across Ontario. Faculty members include counsellors, instructors, professors and librarians.
Northern College is committed to keeping students, staff, community members and partners informed on the status of the 2012 OPSEU collective agreement bargaining process. Up-to-date information can be found at www.northernc.on.ca.
