As you are aware, Ontario’s Public Colleges have been in bargaining with the OPSEU Faculty in efforts to negotiate a new collective agreement.
Should bargaining continue to be unsuccessful, Northern College Faculty, along with the other Ontario Public Colleges OPSEU Faculty will be in a legal strike position as of Monday, October 16, 2017.
In the event of a strike, academic programs, and apprenticeship programs at our Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Haileybury, and Moosonee campuses will be suspended. Distance education programs would also be affected by the disruption and will be suspended the same date.
Northern College will continue to offer full access to our Student Services, Advising, Residences, Gymnasiums, Learning Resource Centres and more. Information in regards to services available to students can be found on our website, and on our Facebook page and Twitter account.
With a potential strike, there will be picket line activity taking place at our campus entrance locations, which would continue until an agreement is reached. Given the volume of traffic entering and leaving the college there will be expected delays from time to time. Our number one priority during a work stoppage is safety. We are asking all students to proceed through picket lines slowly and with caution. When possible it is preferable to walk through a picket line or to carpool. If driving through a picket line, do so very carefully and remember pedestrians always have the right of way. We ask that whenever a picket line is present to make right hand turns onto and off the property.
In the unlikely event that you should encounter any picket line problems due to safety concerns, those affected should contact your campus Student Services office to speak with Security and the Campus Manager.
Northern College values the positive relationships we have with our students and employees, as we all share a strong commitment to student success, and while a strike may present challenges, please know that every effort will be made to assist you with your academic success.
