TIMMINS, ON: The East End Family Health Team has reached a milestone achievement in its history. The clinic, which is located at Northern College Timmins Campus, has reached its ten year anniversary.
The East End Family Health Team was first established in 2004 as the East End Health Network. The network was created in order to increase access to primary health care in Timmins’s east end. At the time the east end had only two doctor’s offices, despite the region’s population of approximately 15,000.
The clinic was designed to serve patients without a family doctor. Patients had access to an interdisciplinary team which included nurses, a pharmacist, and social worker. As a first for Ontario, the health network was led by a nurse practitioner as opposed to a physician.
In 2007 the network was renamed the East End Family Health Team, to reflect its status as a government funded family health team. The team has expanded from its original four employees to include additional health care professionals, including a physician, exercise specialist, dietician and additional nurses.
The team relocated from its original offices in a retrofitted area of the college to an all-new on-campus facility in 2010. Its on campus location is a major plus for Northern College students, as it provides both health care and hands-on learning opportunities.
“I’m very proud of the East End Family Health Team and the hard work that they’ve have put into increasing access to health care in Timmins,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “What started out as a small but exceptional team in a makeshift office has evolved into a full-featured primary care provider with state-of-the-art facilities. This was made possible through the vision and dedication of college and clinic staff.”
On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, the East End Family Health Team will be holding an Open House to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Patients, community partners and members of the public are invited to join the team at their offices at Northern College Timmins Campus between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
