KIRKLAND LAKE, ON: Starting early May, 2014, Massage Therapy students from Northern College Kirkland Lake Campus will undergo their first clinical placement at the Kirkland and District Hospital. The students will gain valuable experience in providing massage therapy services to hospital patients and members of the public.
“Clinical placements are an essential component of all of Northern College’s Health Sciences programming,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “This form of experiential learning helps our students to refine their skills while building their resume for future employment. We’re pleased that our partners at Physio Solutions and the Kirkland and District Hospital are working with us to provide our students with this hands-on training.”
Northern first launched its Massage Therapy program last fall at its Kirkland Lake campus. This will be the first of three clinical placements that the students must complete as part of the two-year compressed program.
The clinical placement will be held at the Kirkland and District Hospital’s physiotherapy department. The space is being provided to the college by Physio Solutions, a private entity which operates the physiotherapy department. Students will benefit from working with the interdisciplinary Physio Solutions team, which includes physiotherapists and kinesiologists.
Students will also have an opportunity to become familiar with working in a hospital setting. In addition to providing services to external clients, the clinical placement will also involve working with hospital patients. A registered massage therapist will be supervising the students at all times.
Members of the public who are interested in booking an appointment with a Northern College massage therapy student can contact Physio Solutions by telephone at 705.568.2141 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The students will be providing massage therapy services in one-hour blocks at a cost of $45 per hour.
