International – Payments and Refunds

NORTHERN COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND INFORMATION

Northern College suggests that all our international students consider all their academic options before making a payment to Northern College. Northern College’s International Student Withdrawal and Refund Policy were developed as per the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD). Both new and returning International students who have paid fees to Northern College may apply for a refund of fees paid in the coming semester if they meet the following criteria.

Eligibility Requirements for International students in Canada

1) Students who transfer to another institution; as long as institution is an approved Designated Learning Institute, and is transferring for the same semester as accepted to Northern College.
If student is transferring to an educational institution in Quebec, only students that are in possession of a Certification of Acceptance (CAQ) will be approved for withdrawal. Failure to provide this CAQ document before the withdrawal deadline will result in the denial of the withdrawal request and no refund will be issued. The CAQ must accompany the Quebec institution’s letter of acceptance.

2) Students who are leaving Canada to return home or elsewhere –must provide evidence by a copy of a valid boarding pass & a re-entry stamp on their passport.

Eligibility Requirements for International students who have not left their home country:
1) Students who have not received a valid study permit allowing their entry into Canada (i.e. VISA Denial or failure to achieve academic admission requirements such as; IELTS scores)

IMPORTANT NOTE: only complete withdrawal and refund requests submitted in advance of the last withdrawal date will be accepted for processing.

For All Students

Students who are requesting a withdrawal or refund must do so in person so their identity can be verified and to safe guard prepaid monies deposited by the student. Withdrawal or refund requests that are submitted by another person on behalf of an international student will not be accepted.

  • written request for withdrawal or refund will only be accepted from students who have not yet received a valid study permit for entry into Canada.

Deferment of Admission

  • Students who defer admission to the next start date waive the right to receive a refund of the first semester payment if they are approved for a valid study permit to Canada. The prepayment of the first semester tuition and fees will remain with Northern College.

For all other request for refunds:
All other request for refunds are subject to a $2500 PLUS a $750 Costs Incurred Fee. This will apply to all international students (new or returning). This administrative fee will apply whether or not a student has registered for classes or not and regardless of when the request for refund is submitted.

Important Refund Information

Students who have paid fees to confirm their program seat will be subject to withdrawal administrative fees regardless of how far in advance of the start of the semester they request a refund.

  • if student applies for a withdrawal after the first ten (10) days of the school semester, only fees paid for subsequent semesters will be refunded. There will be NO refund of fees paid for the current semester.
  • any outstanding balances owing on a student’s account will be deducted from their refund over and above the withdrawal administrative fee.
  • students who have requested arrival and settlement services will be charged the full amount of costs incurred, and these costs will be deducted from their refund, over and above the withdrawal administrative fee.
  • students who have been enrolled in the mandatory Travel Health Insurance will be charged the health insurance premium fees will be deducted from their refund over and above the withdrawal administrative fee.

In all cases, the $100 application fee is non-refundable and where it was waived, will be charged. All refunds will be issued via EFT, through Western Union to the country and payer of origin as the original payment received.

Students from India

You are required to email your agent that you are leaving Northern College and copy our India Northern College Representative, Jankhana Kapasi Kapasij@northern.on.ca and our International Services office international@northern.on.ca. We require a copy of this communication. Allow for up to eight (8) weeks for processing, after submission of a complete refund request, including all necessary documentation. Northern College bears no responsibility for funds that go astray due to inaccurate or obsolete financial information provided by student. Applicants/Students are responsible for all banking and foreign exchange charges associated with their payment/refund.

HOW TO: Withdraw and Request a refund

VISA DENIAL – Northern College will refund prepaid fees (less the $500 refund administrative fee) if an applicant is denied a student study permit under the condition that the applicant provides the Northern College International Services office with an official visa denial letter issued by the Canadian High Commission with the first ten (10) days of the applicants first semester. Provided the submitted visa denial letter is deemed to be genuine and accurate by the Northern College International Services office, the applicant will receive a refund of prepaid fees minus the $500 administrative fee.

The following documents must be submitted for VISA Denial applicants:

  • International Student Withdrawal form
  • Request for Refund
  • Copy of VISA Denial letter
College Withdrawal

International students who request a refund within the first ten (10) days of the beginning of the term (semester) are entitled to a refund less the $2500 PLUS a $750 Costs Incurred Fee. If a request for withdrawal is not received within the first ten (10) school days of the International student’s semester, no refund of semester fees will be issued.

The following documents must be submitted for students transferring to another institution:

  • International Student Withdrawal form
  • Request for Refund
  • A valid offer of admission letter from the other institution indicating start date of studies
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of valid study permit
  • For students studying in Quebec, the CAQ must accompany the Quebec institution’s LOA
  • Northern College student card

Students from India: You are required to email your agent that you are leaving Northern College and copy our India Northern College Representative, Jankhana Kapasi Kapasij@northern.on.ca and our International Services office international@northern.on.ca. We require a copy of this communication. The following documents must be submitted by students who are leaving Canada to return home or elsewhere:

  • International Student Withdrawal form
  • Request for Refund
  • Copy of valid study permit
  • Copy of a valid boarding pass
  • Copy of entry or re-entry stamp in the student’s passport.
  • Copy of email sent your agent, India Northern College Representative and International Services office

As per Northern College’s ten (10) day policy, students requesting a withdrawal or refund must do so in person at the International services office, Northern College Timmins Campus before the day ten (10) date of September 20, 2017 at 3pm.

Only students who request a withdrawal and meet the following criteria will receive an approval document from Northern College:

  • meets all the withdrawal deadlines
  • applies in person at the correct location (Timmins Campus)
  • completes and submits all the required refund provided by college
  • copy of email sent your agent, India Northern College Representative and International Services office
  • submits a valid letter from the other institution indicating start date of studies
  • provides a copy of passport
  • provides a copy of study permit
