“This room dedication is a tangible expression of Northern College’s appreciation of Xstrata’s continued support,” said Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “Through their generosity, they have demonstrated a genuine commitment to community and industry by aiding Northern College in cultivating a highly skilled and educated workforce.”
Xstrata’s generous support has contributed to the construction of a dynamic, open concept trades shop designed for conservation and energy efficiency, cutting edge electrical shops and labs, enabling faculty to teach and students to learn working with the tools and equipment used in our local businesses, homes and industries today and into the future. It has also allowed the integration of state-of-the-art technology and equipment to provide video and web access to students studying at a distance while granting Northern’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation (NOARI) the opportunity to work with business and industry, faculty and students, to solve real problems and make real improvements.
“As the largest employer in Timmins operating the Kidd Mine and Concentrator sites, we recognize the importance of investing in education and skills development. A highly skilled workforce not only benefits Kidd Operations and other local businesses, but also the broader community by making social and economic contributions that improve our quality of life,” said Tom Semadeni, General Manager, Xstrata Copper Kidd-Operations. “Xstrata is pleased to support Northern College in delivering trades and technology training to future employees for our operations, our industry, and our community.”
