Northern College and Timmins Native Friendship Centre Team Up to Deliver Training

Northern College News and Events

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College and the Timmins Native Friendship Centre have partnered to deliver Women in Technology – an innovative training program geared to Aboriginal women in Timmins and the surrounding area. The program is fully funded by the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

Developing computer skills is a major focus of the ten-week program. The program will teach participants how to use Microsoft Office, a software suite used in most workplaces. Microsoft Office includes applications like Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

The program will also help students develop employability and life skills. Students will have an opportunity to create and refine resumes and cover letters, and will also practice interview skills. Representatives from business and community agencies will help students develop various soft skills which are equally important to technical ability.

While enrolled in the program, students will have access to the many student services available at Northern College Timmins Campus. This includes access to academic support services, as well as the assistance of Aboriginal Student Advisor Joseph Nakogee and Elder David Faries.

“At Northern College, we strongly believe that collaboration between educational institutions, employers and community organizations is of great benefit to our communities,” said Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “Partnerships like the one we have with the Timmins Native Friendship Centre allow us to develop innovative programming based on community need. This type of program can lead to successful futures not only for the students, but for entire organizations and our communities in turn.”

Northern College has also partnered with the Moose Cree Education Authority to deliver the same program in Moose Factory this spring.

The Women in Technology program is being offered at no cost. The program will run Monday to Friday, from February 10 to April 25.
