TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is pleased to announce a significant provincial funding investment in its Mining Centric Research Innovation Hub located at the Timmins Campus.
The Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade invested 191, 466 dollars to allow Northern College to conduct mining-focused research and development.
“This will help the college conduct mining focused research and provide R&D opportunities that will benefit the entire northern economy,” stated Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We recognize that research investments continue to be essential in supporting technological development for commercial application makes businesses more competitive and at the end of the day, creates new jobs.”
This investment will allow Northern College’s Mining Centric Innovation to help augment experiential learning opportunities for students by creating tangible pathways to explore and innovate new technologies that can help define the industries they hope to join following graduation.
“This investment from our Provincial Government will contribute to allowing the college to dedicate an entire wing of our Timmins Campus to research and innovation within the mining sector and beyond, helping us to meet a growing demand across the province,” stated Amy McKillip, Manager of Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Northern College. “This 24,000 square foot space will continue to demonstrate the commitment that Northern College has to community growth and economic development throughout Northern Ontario and beyond.”
Northern College applauds the Provincial Government’s investment in research and innovation at the post-secondary level, by helping to shape the minds of budding young professionals, this investment will instill a greater appetite for innovation within the industrial sector.
“The Innovation Hub is a pipeline for industry to link with students, foster innovation and create problem solving environments,” stated Dr. Audrey Penner, Vice President of Academic and Student Success at Northern College. “This supports job creation and the ‘open for business’ approach.”
This funding was announced alongside a Timmins-centric investment of just under 600,000 dollars from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to several local businesses like The Bucket Shop Inc., Conveyers Plus LTD. and Sewn Home.
