TIMMINS, ON: Five local youth have been given the opportunity to learn from famed choreographers Sean Cheesman, Jordan Clark, Matt Marr and Amanda Cleghorn this July. Thirteen year-old Courtney Lachapelle, 11 year-old Jasmine Aubrey, 16 year-old Kassidy Corbin, 10 year-old Kiara Houle-David, and 13 year-old Merrick Gagnon-Doucette have received free registration to Northern College’s upcoming dance workshop iDance 2014.

The college offered the spots to KidSport Timmins with the aim of breaking down financial barriers to help more youth experience this unique opportunity, which features celebrity choreographers and sessions on self-esteem, nutrition and cyber safety. Representatives from Northern College and KidSport Timmins joined the families of the selected youth at KidSport Timmins’ office to make a formal announcement yesterday evening.

“This is great opportunity for these children,” said Colleen Landers, President of KidSport Timmins. “We thank Northern College for providing the five free spots so that these dancers can live their dreams.”

“One of the college’s key priorities is to increase access to learning opportunities. Providing these spots is a natural fit,” said Karen Hamel, Training Consultant at Northern College and member of the iDance 2014 organizing committee. “This is the first event of its kind in the Timmins region, and we’re thrilled to give these young dancers a chance to experience it.”

The five participants, who were drawn from a pool of 25 applicants, responded to the news with shock and enthusiasm. “I couldn’t believe I won,” said Merrick. “This is so exciting! I can’t wait to meet all of those professional dancers and actually dance with them. Wow! This is such I great opportunity! I’m so lucky!”

“I was so excited and happy,” said Kiara. “I could not believe I won.”

“I am extremely excited as I will learn new steps,” said Kassidy. “I will get to meet one of the stars from my favorite show. I cannot believe that I won. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. It is something I will never forget.”

“Very exciting,” said Jasmine. “I’m really excited to go.”

“I am thankful for the opportunity to dance with some amazing choreographers,” said Courtney. “This will be an amazing week and I would like to thank Northern College for giving me this opportunity! I’m very excited and can’t wait to spend a week dancing and learning new routines!”

There are still a limited number of spaces available at iDance 2014. Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are open to youth between the ages of 10 and 18.
