Northern College Heavy Equipment Operator Grads Strengthen Local Workforce

Northern College News and Events

TIMMINS, ON: The latest graduates from Northern College’s Five-Piece Heavy Equipment Operator and AZ Truck Driving program have entered the workforce. The program, which is part of the college’s Apprenticeship, Community and Corporate Training (ACCT) division, was delivered in collaboration with a number of community partners.

13 students attended the latest offering of the college’s Five-Piece Heavy Equipment Operator and AZ Truck Driving program at the Timmins Campus, which had an Aboriginal focus. Students from as far away as Moosonee and Moose Factory travelled to Timmins to attend the 15 week program.

One graduating student has been hired by Custom Concrete, after training in the company’s gravel pit as part of the program. Custom Concrete and other local employers utilized the opportunity to observe the students during their training, and scout for potential employees.

“These exceptional graduates wouldn’t have received their training without the dedication of our industry and community partners,” says Christine Heavens, Executive Director, Community, Business Development, Employment Services and ACCT at Northern College. “Collaboration with partners like Custom Concrete allows us to create new training opportunities that match the needs of local employers. These opportunities result in jobs for our graduates and a stronger regional workforce. Collaborative programs are a huge success for everyone involved.”

Northern College’s Commercial Driving and Heavy Equipment Operator training is available to the public as well as to employers who are looking to develop their workforce. Through the college, students can train to prepare for licence tests including AZ, BZ, CZ, DZ, E, F and Z, and operator training for heavy equipment including backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, graders, loaders and rock trucks.
