TIMMINS, ON: Northern College, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Cochrane Timiskaming Branch and NorthernTEL, will play host to Removing the Stigma – An Evening with Valerie and Catherine Pringle on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. The evening will provide ample networking opportunities for attendees, beginning with a cocktail reception from 6-7 p.m. followed by a presentation from 7-8:30 p.m.

Valerie Pringle is one of Canada’s best known and most respected broadcasters, public figures and volunteers. Her daughter, Catherine, is a communications professional and advocate for the increased awareness of and support for those suffering from mental health issues. Having suffered from severe anxiety and depression, she is extremely passionate about the cause.

“Increasing awareness and understanding of mental health issues is the first step in breaking through the stigma that surrounds mental illness,” says Clark MacFarlane, Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Cochrane Timiskaming Branch. “Misconceptions surrounding mental illness can cause people not only to hesitate to reach out, but also prevent people from offering help. We want to change that.”

As the nation-wide leader and champion for mental health, CMHA facilitates access to the resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness.

The event will be held at Northern College Porcupine Campus and proceeds from ticket sales will go toward supporting an online resource designed to be of immediate assistance to students with mental health disabilities. Northern College Student Association (NCSA) is currently working on the development of this support service.
