TIMMINS, ON: Most grade 12 secondary school students are gearing up to apply to post-secondary institutions. Northern College hosted a Panel Session on Thursday, October 5, at the Timmins Campus for guidance counsellors helping those same students. Over 20 high school guidance counsellors and teachers from regional school boards attended.
Designed to educate guidance counsellors on what Northern College has to offer, the session provided an overview of the College’s programs and services as well as the benefits of pursuing a higher education locally.
The event was held in the Quill Lounge with Northern College President Dr. Fred Gibbons welcoming guests and showcasing the College. He talked about the new developments happening on campus, including the construction of the new Integrated Emergency Services Complex, purchasing of state-of-the-art equipment, and pathway options offered through collaborative partnerships with other post-secondary institutions.
“Hosting this type of event gives us an excellent opportunity to not only showcase our amazing programs and services but to share what we are doing to ensure that our curriculum is tailored to needs of local industry so that our graduates are well-equipped for the job markets of today and tomorrow,” said Dr. Gibbons.
The panel covered a range of topics including financial assistance, application process, accessibility and advising services, applied research and innovation, and vocational training.
Deans and Associate Deans from each area of study provided updates on their program offerings, changes in curriculum and delivery, as well as advancements in their hands-on trainers, equipment, labs, and simulation mannequins.
The panel also informed guests of the bridging opportunities available. Northern offers over 200 transfer agreements that allow students to utilize credits earned at the College for direct admission to specialized programs at other Canadian and international colleges and universities.
Guests were also given the opportunities to mingle with other guidance counsellors and gain specific college information by asking the panelists questions.
Registration for Fall 2018 is currently open, and there is still time to apply for the Winter 2018 intake. Students can learn more about Northern College programs and how to apply at www.northernc.on.ca.
