TIMMINS, ON: Northern College’s Apprenticeship, Community and Corporate Training (ACCT) division and Valley Driver Training of Hanmer, Ontario have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a partnership to combine resources to coordinate and deliver Commercial Driving and Heavy Equipment Operator training.
A unique aspect of the program delivery is that all of the training is hands-on; there is no observation time or simulator training. Time spent in this program is time spent working with the equipment.
Both the Heavy Equipment Operator and Commercial Driving programs are open to the public as well as to companies who are looking to develop their workforce through employee training. “We offer a variety of individual programs or combinations of programs. We’ll also work directly with employers to offer refresher training or to conduct employee assessments if an influx of safety incidents or near misses is evident,” said Karen Hamel, Training Consultant with Northern College. “Conversely, if employers are looking for operators or licensed drivers, they can get in touch with us to recruit students. We’ll assist with recruitment, hold information sessions and deliver the exact training the employer is looking for.”
Over 35 students have been trained under this partnership model. To date, all 35 have been hired by local companies.
