TIMMINS, ON: Northern College’s 12th annual traditional powwow will be held at the Porcupine Campus April 6 and 7, 2013. This year’s theme is Honouring our Mother Earth. The powwow promises a weekend of traditional drumming, dancing, arts and crafts, workshops and educational booths.
This celebration brings together students, families, and members of our community. It showcases remarkable performances, while highlighting customary aspects of Aboriginal tradition, such as drumming, dancing, singing, and friendship.
“Cultural events are one of the many ways we realize our strategic direction of Aboriginal Perspectives and are an integral part of the Northern College experience,” said Fred Gibbons, Northern College President. “Segregation of different cultural educational concepts is an antiquated approach and does not speak to the ever increasing need for diversity and understanding. All members of the community are welcome to share in what has become a much anticipated annual highlight at Northern College.”
David Faries is hosting the powwow as the Master of Ceremonies, along with Grandmother Roberta Oshkawbewisens, Grandfather Robert Bigtrack and Arena Director Gerald Chum.
Host drum will be Chickeney Creek of Attawapiskat and co-host drum will be Highridge Singers of Moose Factory. Mariette Sutherland and Tim McGregor will be the head dancers, joined by youth lead dancers Tasheena Sarazin and Gordon Hookimaw, child lead dancers Miyopin Cheecho and Little Bear Babin, and two-time World Hoop Champion Lisa Odjig.
Saturday will kick off with a Grand Entry at 12:00 p.m. and will feature arts and crafts, a toonie feast and information booths, with a second Grand Entry at 7:00 p.m. and again at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. The festivities will conclude with giveaways and closing ceremonies, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
The event is family-friendly, free and open and accessible to the public. For more information or to register a vendor table, please contact Joseph Nakogee at 705.235.3211 ext. 2233 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
