Program Description
This two-semester certificate program will help students to:

– Prepare for a college trade or technology program.
– Increase their skills and confidence in math, science, computers, and technical studies.
– Explore career options in trades and technology.

This program is designed to assist students who either lack the standard college prerequisites or who need to improve mathematical, technical, science or computer skills before entering a technical or trades program. This program includes a range of courses designed to help students explore career options in trades and technology, and to provide students with the skills necessary to enter a one year trades program or a two-year or three-year technician/technology program.

Career Opportunities
Students may find employment in occupations requiring general education or with firms which provide their own training, but the majority are likely to continue their studies.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
Mature Students
CAAT-C ENG (Grade 10 equivalency)

Or mature student status (an applicant who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent, and will have reached the age of 19 years on or before the start of the program). Mature students must undergo academic testing prior to admission into a program. Call the Admissions Office at 705-235-7222 for more details. Semester 1
CM1803 Pre-Technology Communications I
Pre-Technology Communications I will give the learner the opportunity to develop thinking, writing, and speaking skills necessary for communicating successfully, both in college and in the workplace. This course begins with outlining for the purposes of planning, organizing and understanding business messages with a focus on the importance of analyzing purpose and audience. Students will write effective business messages, adhering to the required elements of style appropriate for professional workplace communication. Also, class time will be used to refine writing style as writing difficulties present themselves.

GN1033 Health and Safety
This course is an introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. Topics include the Act and several related regulations. The student will also complete a valid WHMIS certification course during the semester.

GN1043 College Orientation
College Orientation will provide students with the opportunity to explore and understand the process of gaining a postsecondary education while developing required learning skills and personal management techniques needed to be successful in a post secondary or other training program. Students will learn and practice various academic skills and personal management techniques designed to promote more effective learning habits in postsecondary programs, in the workplace, and as life-long learners. Finally, as student inquire into and plan for a selected career opportunity or postsecondary destination they will define the steps required to make their next goal a reality.

IN1093 Computer Applications for Business and Technology
Students are introduced to commonly used features of the most widely used microcomputer applications – MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. Basic computer skills are required as prerequisites. A series of lectures, projects, and exercises will take advantage of Microsoft Office features. Word’s extensive menu, toolbar, and template features will be used to create various business documents. Project material is developed so that students will apply their software skills to course material throughout their program of studies.

IN1103 Intro to CAD
This course provides students with the ability to produce two-dimensional drawings and details using computer-aided drafting. Students become acquainted with the skills and terminology required for a CAD environment.

MA1803 Pre-Technology Mathematics I
This course will provide an emphasis on basic math skills required to prepare for trades and technology specific math.

SC1803 Science for Trades and Technology I
This course will provide students with the science basics appropriate to trades and technology.

Semester 2
CM2803 Pre-Technology Communications II
A continuation of Pre-Technology Communications I, students will also be introduced to basic trades/technology related communications skills.

MA2803 Pre-Technology Mathematics II
A continuation of Pre-Technology Math I, students will also be introduced to trades and technology specific math skills at the college level.

SK2803 Skills for Trades and Technology
A continuation of Science for Trades and Technology I, students will further develop science skills specific to trades and technology.

SC2803 Science for Trades and Technology
An exploratory shop/lab course, students will participate in hands-on experiential learning projects in the different trades and technology fields.
