Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today's construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance. This program is a laptop program with a mandatory lab fee of $1000 for lease of the laptop. Upon graduation, students have the option of buying out the laptop for $1. Employment Opportunities Students graduating from this program may look for employment in construction management, contracting, estimating, insurance appraisals, sales, government services, building inspection and plans examination, consulting, support services, building maintenance and management. Admission Requirements Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Or equivalent. Or mature student status (an applicant who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent, and will have reached the age of 19 years on or before the start of the program).
