As a graduate of this program, you will repair and overhaul automobiles, trucks and other automotive vehicles by examining, diagnosing and pinpointing the nature and extent of malfunctions and/or repairs required.

You will learn how to safely diagnose, inspect and adjust or repair: engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive shafts, axles and differentials, suspension, steering, alignment and brake components.

The program will also teach you to diagnose, inspect and service: fuel and emissions systems, engine computer controls, electrical systems (alternators, starters, wiring and other electrical systems and equipment on the vehicle) and air conditioning systems.

Upon completion of this program, you will be able to use shop equipment, such as hoists, brake lathes, tire changers and wheel balancers, alignment machines, scanners, emission analyzers, air conditioning recovery and recharging stations, AVR machines, presses, as well as hand tools and measuring tools.

You will also learn the basic principles of welding using oxyacetylene and arc welding techniques. You will be introduced to the metal cutting process using cutting torches, plasma cutting equipment and arc air cutting.

(Note) Contact North students will be required to attend three practical (shop) sessions on site at Porcupine Campus per semester. Contact program coordinator for details.

Students who successfully complete this program, may continue into Semester III of the Motive Power Technician program at Cambrian College.

Employment Opportunities

You may obtain work as an apprentice or trainee carrying out maintenance on highway motor vehicles or work in other areas of the automotive field, such as service manager, service advisor, warranty clerk, parts manager, parts sales or vehicle sales.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
Grade 12 English (C, M, U)
Grade 11 Math (C, M, U)

Or equivalent.

Or mature student status (an applicant who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent, and will have reached the age of 19 years on or before the start of the program). Mature students must undergo academic testing prior to admission into a program. Call the Admissions Office at 705-235-7222 for more details.
