Exciting New Partnership with Hydro One

Up to 30% of Hydro One’s employees will soon be eligible for retirement. These workers will need to be replaced and Hydro One, as well as many other utility companies and industries, will be looking for job-ready college graduates. This is why Hydro One has partnered with Northern College and three other Ontario colleges to make sure it has the workforce it needs.

Through this partnership, students in Northern’s two-year Electrical Engineering Technician program and three-year Electrical Engineering Technology program will graduate with the technical skills and practical experience to get the job done in the electrical transmission and distribution utility sector.

Hydro One is working with Northern and the other colleges on program review and curriculum development, investing in scholarships and bursaries and donating equipment.

Jocelyne Adam. A Northern College – Hydro One Success Story!Hydro One Success Story

With two Northern College diplomas in hand, Jocelyne Adam is well-poised to reach the heights of her career as an electrical maintenance apprentice with Hydro One.

Jocelyne, a young francophone from Timmins, holds a Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic certificate and an Electrical Engineering Technician diploma from Northern College.

“I chose Northern College because it offered the program I wanted close to home,” she explains. Cost savings aside, Jocelyne also notes that the College’s state-of-the-art lab and equipment, along with its friendly atmosphere, were qualities that drew her back to Northern, not only once, but two and three times, the third time to complete her Basic Level Apprenticeship in December 2007.

Upon graduating from the Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic program, Jocelyne decided to return to school and enrolled in the Electrical Engineering Technician program.

“I was attracted by the many job opportunities and the high starting salaries in the electrical field,” she says.

Jocelyne has been employed as an apprentice with Hydro One since May 2006, and she looks forward to obtaining her journeyperson’s license.
