TIMMINS, ON: The Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence and Northern College are pleased to announce a strategic partnership to provide additional labour market training opportunities for the Northwestern Ontario region.
The need for enhanced training was identified through the work of the region’s Labour Market Working Group. In 2015, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and Lac Seul First Nation formed a Labour Market Working Group (LMWG) to facilitate the creation of a Community Human Resource Plan and a Community Employment & Training Plan. The LMWG worked to create partnerships between First Nation governments and organizations, the business, education, health/social services and mining sectors of Sioux Lookout and other employment/training organizations. It consisted of a group of twenty committed stakeholders concerned with the labour market challenges and economic viability of the Sioux Lookout and Lac Seul First Nation region. Sioux Lookout is a service centre for thirty-one Far North First Nation communities located in Northern Ontario.
“I am very pleased that the contribution this group made resulted in the strategic partnership between the Lac Seul Training Centre and Northern College,” said Vicki Blanchard, Sioux Lookout’s Economic Development Manager and LMWG Co-Chair.
The recent Northwest Training and Adjustment Board Employer One survey results further confirmed that although several regional employers provide training to their employees, additional barriers remain including a lack of local cost effective and relevant training resources which prohibits employees from taking part.
“Expanded Training and Educational offerings through a collaborative and strategic partnership between Northern College and the Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence will serve the sector well and is a key strategy to ensure sector labour market success,” says Christine Heavens, Northern College Executive Director Community Business Development and Employment Services.
The partnership hopes to bring more Second Career funded and career linked training programs to the region. Regional employers can also now register, pay and immediately start to train employees utilizing short training courses such as WHMIS, Lock-out / Tag-out, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Aboriginal Cultural Awareness through the newly developed Online E-Learn platform accessed through the Training Centre’s website or at http://lacseul.online-compliance.com .
“Although the Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence is located in the community of Hudson, our goal with Northern College is to bring essential training where it needs to be delivered; If clients are unable to come to us, we can go to them”, states Lac Seul Economic Development Manager of Business Operations, Barry King.
Heavens visited the region May 9th to 13th to promote the partnership with the Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence. The group visited Sioux Lookout and several First Nation Communities to hear about training needs.
