In order to obtain a forest firefighter position, you must complete training from an Ontario of Natural Resources (MNR) accredited SP-100 Forest Firefighting Training Program.

The SP100 course consists of 40% classroom and 60% practical field work. Course content is as follows:

  • Compass
  • Hose laying and water applications
  • Power pump set-up
  • Fireline patrol and observations
  • Water bombing operations
  • Hand tools
  • Personal safety on the fireline

  • Safety around chainsaw operations
  • Mop-up principles

Participants must arrive with CSA approved safety toed boots and to start the course in appropriate clothing for class and field exercises based on current weather conditions, i.e. rain suit and warm jacket. The balance of the protective equipment will be issued at the start of the course. Instructors and students must wear this safety equipment on all field exercises.
