Timmins – Timmins is a tidier place thanks to a collaborative effort by employees of Northern College and Collège Boréal who organized a community clean-up event and BBQ as part of the 50th anniversary of the Ontario College system.
The event aimed to enhance Timmins’s natural beauty and to strengthen relationships between institutions while giving back to the community. Employees from the two colleges and members of the community spent a part of the afternoon cleaning up litter and debris. Afterwards, they reunited for a community BBQ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Ontario College system.
“Northern College has been an integral part of our community for 50 years,” said Dr. Fred Gibbons, Northern College President. “Today, working in partnership with our sister college, Collège Boréal, this event is another tangible demonstration of how colleges work for the betterment of the community.”
“Boréal staff are proud of the communities in which we work, and we are happy to help make them more beautiful for everyone to enjoy,” added Jean-Pierre Nadon, Director of Collège Boréal’s Timmins campus. “Boréal and Northern collaborate in many ways already, and this event further strengthens our relationship so that we can better serve students and the community.”
“Collège Boréal and Northern College have provided students with the benefits of completing their education in Timmins with the hopes that they remain in our community and workforce upon graduation,” said Timmins Mayor, Steve Black. “They are a great asset to the community in continuing to educate tomorrow’s leaders and simultaneously supporting our local economy. We look forward to more partnerships such as this, to continue to build and strengthen our community. Congratulations on the 50th anniversary.”
Ontario’s college system was established in 1967 by the provincial government to offer relevant and accessible skills training and education that supports labour force development and economic growth. Colleges have accomplished all of that and more, evolving over the decades to support the needs of students, employers, industries, and communities.
Northern College and Collège Boréal are joining the 50th anniversary celebrations to highlight the important role that community colleges play in preparing graduates for careers close to home and around the world. The theme of the anniversary celebration is The Start of Something Amazing. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to look back and to think ahead about what the next 50 years may bring as they share college stories and experiences as part of the celebration.
