Northern College Pleased with Federal Budget Investments in Post-Secondary Education

Northern College News and Events

Northern College congratulates the Minister of Finance on his first Budget and welcomes the government’s clear recognition of the vital role that post-secondary institutions will play in revitalizing Canada’s economy.

Northern College is especially pleased to see the government respond to colleges’ and institutes’ call for additional infrastructure funding through the new Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Funds, which commits $2 billion over the next three years. Coupled with the $9 billion Building Canada Fund, this will help drive a much needed renewal in college and institute infrastructure, 60% of which currently exceeds its 40-year life cycle.

“These funds will be put to good use by colleges including Northern where we know we face significant deferred maintenance and life cycle replacement costs in many of our buildings”, said Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College.

“In addition to upgrading our buildings, Northern College also has several new construction projects on our drawing board that have been awaiting suitable funding opportunities. With the Federal Government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, we will now assess each of these projects for funding eligibility and proceed accordingly”, stated Gibbons.

Northern College is also pleased to see increased levels of support for the research granting agencies including confirmation of the Budget 2015 commitments of $5 million for the College and Community Innovation Program and $7 million for Social Sciences and Humanities Resource Council partnership grants in 2016-17.  Given the impressive results that modest investments in applied research have yielded to date and the dramatic growth in college and institute capacity, Northern College welcomes the government’s commitment to redesign how it supports innovation and growth. “These programs have enabled Northern College to work collaboratively with local business and industry to solve real world problems and help foster innovation in the workplace to the benefit of our industry partners and our students who acquire rich experiential learning through these projects.”

Northern College is a proud member of Colleges and Institutes Canada, the national and international voice of Canada’s publicly supported colleges, institutes and polytechnics.
