    Our second session started off strong with two returning students working on their Business Model Canvas with Jeremy Elomaa from Business Enterprise Centre. Jeremy provided our students with useful tools and information that allowed them to comprehend how to properly develop their business ideas.

    November 2019 – Past Event

    Hear trailblazing entrepreneur and original founder of the Toronto Raptors, John Bitove Jr., personally share how he secured an NBA franchise for the city. Hosted by Seneca Alumni, a live link will be available and posted to our Facebook Page shortly to watch via video conference for Thursday November 21, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    October 2019 – Past Event 

    October kicked off the first of four parts of the Entrepreneurial Development Series 2019 at Porcupine Campus! Our students had a wonderful time listening to and working with Jeremy Elomaa, from Business Enterprise Centre, while they explored the fundamental ideation behind entrepreneurial inspiration.

  • Northern College Applauds Provincial Investment in Research and Development

    September 2019 – Past Event
    The Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade invested 191, 466 dollars to allow Northern College to conduct mining-focused research and development. This investment will allow Northern College’s Mining Centric Innovation to help augment experiential learning opportunities for students by creating tangible pathways to explore and innovate new technologies that can help define the industries they hope to join following graduation.

  • Innovation Hub’s Applied Research Highlighted at College Day 2019

    April 2019 - Past Event
    Northern Innovation Hub attended College Day 2019 to showcase how Applied Research thrives in the north. College Day is an opportunity for colleges to demonstrate achievements in applied research and innovations. In attendance were ministers and their staff, MPPs and their staff, deputy ministers and other senior civil servants with college board chairs and presidents. During the event, Colin Gervais and Krisma Charlton were delighted to meet Chris Glover, MPP and NDP Critic for training, colleges and universities. Gaetan St. Denis (Northern College Professor) and Jim Kendall (Gold Sniffer, President and founder) were also on-hand to talk to attendees about the applied research project "Gold Sniffer", a device capable of estimating mineral content in rock samples.

  • Start Up North “Students – Start Your Business”

    March 2019 - Past Event
    Start Up North was a huge success, with ten teams from Northern Ontario coming from as far north as Hearst and Kapuskasing and as far south as Kirkland Lake and Haileybury. The secondary and post-secondary students pitched their business ideas in front of a panel of judges. Participants spent two days working on developing their ideas using the Business Model Canvas and was supported by mentors within local organizations dedicated to economic development. The 2nd runner-up from Kapuskasing was Northern Edge, the 1st runner-up from Timmins was Hydro Grows North, and the winner of Start Up North was Homemade AF from Hearst. These inspiring entrepreneurs have shown their dedication and willingness to be successful in their future endeavors. Click the link to view report by CTV: Start Up North Interviews

  • 2019 Enactus Regional Competition in Mississauga

    March 2019 - Past Event
    Two teams from Northern College competed at the 2019 Regional Exposition along with 37 other teams from central Canada. The two teams got to pitch their sustainable social enterprise idea to a group of judges from Canada's leading industries that are knowledgeable in the social ecosystem. The two-day competition showcased how students can harness their entrepreneurial mindsets to make an impact towards Canada's economy.

  • PDAC 2019

    March 2019 - Past Event
    Amy McKillip attended PDAC’s (Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada) 2019 Convention held in Toronto. The four-day convention is the world’s largest convention for companies and organizations in the mining or mineral exploration to showcase new discoveries, exciting projects and of course all the exhibits.  During the event Amy had the pleasure of sitting in with the panel for Pan-Northern Mining Research Alliance (PNMRA) to discuss mining research in Northern Ontario.

  • Pitch Workshop

    February 2019 - Past Event
    In September 2018, Northern Innovation Hub started the Entrepreneurship Training workshops that was held at the Timmins, Haileybury and Kirkland Lake campuses. In total there was four workshops including Ideation, Business Model Canvas, Customer Validation and finally a Pitch workshop.  A total of 87 students participated in the workshops, of which 20 students received a Certificate of Completion for attending all four workshops. Colin Gervais presented five certificates to students from Kirkland Lake, six certificates to students at the Haileybury campus and another six at the Timmins' campus. Congratulations to all students who helped make the Entrepreneurship Training workshops a huge success.
