TIMMINS, ON: Northern College hosted four delegates from China’s Henan Economy & Trade Vocational College at the Timmins Campus last Friday. The delegation visited the college to further the development of their partnership that has seen Northern College offer programs at Henan College since September 2015.
Henan College, which has over 20,000 enrolled students, was founded in 1960, in Zhengzhou City. With nearly 10-million residents, Zhengzhou is a rapidly growing city of Henan Province in east-central China.
The delegation from Henan College, which was led by President Wanyi Su, met with a team of Northern College staff, including President and CEO Fred Gibbons.
“We’re very excited to be collaborating with Henan Economy and Trade Vocational College to achieve our common goal of providing high-quality education for learners in our communities,” said Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “The international joint venture partnerships that we’ve established are a shining example of our vision of how success for all can be achieved through learning and partnerships.”
Northern identified Henan as a partner institution due to a strong alignment in programming at both institutions, particularly in the areas of business programming. The joint venture partnership between the institutions has seen two Northern College programs delivered in English at Henan College; Business Accounting and Business Marketing.
All Northern programming offered at Henan features identical curriculum to what Northern offers in Canada. Students who enroll in a Northern College program at Henan are registered as Northern College students and will earn an Ontario-based Northern College diploma upon graduation.
The agreement also provides opportunities for student exchanges and faculty training. Northern College students attending Henan College have the opportunity to study and Chinese faculty members have the opportunity to receive training at one of Northern’s campuses.

This group of Chinese partner delegates was one of several to visit the college. Previous visits included officials from Taizhou University and Anhui Communications Vocational & Technical College.
