TIMMINS, ON: Northern College Student Association (NCSA) Timmins Campus President Charles Shih has won the College Student Alliance (CSA) Leadership Award. The CSA represents student bodies at 15 of Ontario’s public colleges. Shih received the CSA Leadership Award for the North Region.
The CSA`s North Region includes four colleges; Cambrian, Confederation, Northern and Sault. Shih was nominated for the award by his fellow student association presidents in recognition of his strong leadership skills and involvement in several province-wide CSA initiatives.
“While it’s true that we play a major role in shaping our students into who they wish to be, the opposite is true too,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “Our students help to shape the culture, values and atmosphere that encompass the Northern experience. It’s thanks to outstanding student leaders like Mr. Shih that Northern College is the place where our students want to be.”

For the past year, the Timmins Campus NCSA has focused on enhancing the Northern experience by emphasizing student life and engagement. The association’s activities included pool tournaments, a performance by stunt magician Wes Barker, intramural and inter-campus sports tournaments and amplified on-campus nightlife.
Shih led Timmins Campus involvement in province-wide CSA activities. In unison with schools across the province, the NCSA participated in a mental health initiative called the Yellow Umbrella Project. As part of the endeavour, NCSA Timmins held a free breakfast for students and invited both community agencies and St. John Ambulance therapy dogs to the campus.
“It’s an honour that my counterparts at other Ontario colleges have selected me for this award,” says Shih. “The Timmins Campus NCSA has done a phenomenal job this year. I think we’ve helped improve upon Northern’s already stellar student life, and I’m confident that we’ll do even better next year.”
Shih will serve a second term as Timmins Campus NCSA President for the 2014 – 2015 academic year. He plans to shift the focus of the Timmins Campus NCSA to enhancing the relationship between Timmins Campus students and the broader Timmins community.
