Northern College and it’s project partners are pleased to offer these funded training opportunities. Learn more about the Project Partners that have made it possible for us to offer these tuition-free training programs.

Please note that program start dates are subject to change. Limited funded seats may be available for those who meet the project and program eligibility criteria. Additionally, applicants will be subjected to various selection processes and final candidates will be selected based on partner approval.

General Skills Training

Future Focused: Work and Job Readiness

Location: Delivered Virtually

Cost: Free

This pre-education and pre-employment program is designed to prepare students for workplace and education expectations increasing student success, employment, and workforce retention rates. The program is a prerequisite to any student entering any other training program as a new job seeker.

Computers, Communications, and Calculations Training

Location: TBD 

Cost: Free

The Computers, Communications and Calculations program provides each trainee with a laptop to complete Computer Applications including an introduction to the various Microsoft programs. Students will also enhance their written, and verbal communication skills as they explore various resources used to communicate in the mining sector.

Youth Job Connection

Location: Timmins, Kirkland Lake, and Temiskaming Shores

Cost: Free

Training for Careers in Healthcare

Healthcare Support Services Worker

Location: Delivered Virtually

Cost: Free

This Health Care Support Service worker program includes provincially mandated training combined with pandemic safety training, person centered care, documentation and reporting.

Personal Support Worker

Location: Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Haileybury, Moosonee and James Bay Coast

Cost: Free

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) Program is a two semester program developed as part of the Ontario provincial government’s plan to reform long term care.

Personal Support Worker Assistant

Location: Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Haileybury, and Moosonee Campuses

Cost: Free

The PSW Assistant program is a stepping stone to the Personal Support Worker program and allows for rapid entry into the workforce.

Training for Careers in Mining

Mining Essentials: Work Readiness Training for Indigenous Peoples (MiHR Program)

Location: Timmins

Cost: Free

The Mining Essentials Program, developed and certified by the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR), has been designed to increase the involvement and engagement of Indigenous peoples in the mining and exploration sector by providing work ready and essential skills training needed to gain meaningful employment. 

Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core Program

Location: Agnico Eagle Macassa Site Kirkland Lake 

Cost: Free

This modular program has a 95% employment success rate within 3 months of graduation. The program covers the knowledge and skills required to work competently as an Underground Hard Rock Miner.

Environmental and Field Monitor – 6-Week Program

Location: Kirkland Lake Campus

Cost: Free

The Environmental and Field Monitor Program is designed to help participants understand the mining industry legislative requirements; best practices and standards with respect to environmental monitoring; wildlife management, data entry, reporting and the Health and Safety requirements while working with the environment.

Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program

Location: Kirkland Lake Campus and Training Drill Site as well as placement location

Cost: Free

Northern College has developed this modular training program to cover the basic knowledge and skills required to work competently as a helper to a Surface and Underground Diamond Drill Operator.

Mineral Processing Operator Program

Location: Detour Lake Mine

Cost: Free

This modular training program covers the basic knowledge
and skills required to work competently as a Mineral
Processing Operator.

Culinary Service and Support Worker Program

Location: Online and onsite including a placement (which may be at a remote camp)

Cost: Free

This Culinary, Service and Support Worker Program combines soft skills and workplace related training.

This program seeks to address the staffing and training needs for mining camp culinary and support service workers within Ontario.

Training for Careers in Trades

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Technician & Industrial Mechanic Millwright Trades Training

Location: Timmins

Cost: Free

These trades programs are designed to provide learners with an exposure to the trades and include the delivery of level 1 apprenticeship theory for the trade.

Welding Pre-Apprenticeship

The welding pre-apprenticeship program is designed to provide learners with an in-depth exposure to the Welding trade.

Mobile Trades Training Programs – Carpentry/Construction, Welding and Multi-Trade (Construction, Plumbing and Electrical)

Mobile Trades Training is designed to provide students with exposure to skilled trades.  With intent of offering Welding, Carpentry/Construction and a Multi-Trade projects, these programs are customizable to meet community needs. 

Environmental Monitor – 5 Day Course

Location: Kirkland Lake

Cost: Free

Learn from professionals in a classroom and field setting. Topics include permits and inspections, spills preparedness, response, and reporting, waste management, air, soil, and groundwater monitoring and more. You will receive a training manual to help apply your skills and knowledge.

Trades Work Readiness – Health and Safety Training

Healthcare Food Service Worker

Location: Delivered Virtually

Cost: Free

This program provides a critical knowledge foundation for Food Service Workers in a Long Term Care or Hospital setting. It is also a pathway to employment in the food industry through providing valuable training on food safety, preparation, and nutrition.

AZ Truck Driver Training

This program provides participants with the training and skills necessary to get their AZ License. Graduates of this program will be confident in their ability to achieve long term success and be work ready for any truck driving opportunity.

Keepers of the Circle designed and delivers an evidence-based, culturally-rooted pre-employment literacy and essential skills training programs that links participants directly to jobs through industry partnerships.

Mobile Trades Training – Construction

Location: Sioux Lookout, ON

Cost: Free

Mobile Trades Training is designed to provide students with exposure to skilled trades.  Training to include health and safety training as well as an introduction to construction through completion of a community building project. 

Security Guard (In-Person Training)

Designed to provide students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to write and successfully complete the exam to become a Licensed Security Guard.

Food Service Worker

This program provides valuable training on food safety, nutrition, preparation, and service. Students will have a solid foundation of knowledge to work in a variety of food-related roles.

Service Support Worker Program
